Spring Break 2009 Destinations!
Here is an update on Spring Break 2009 at CIP, just in case you missed it during Parents Weekend. Spring Break at CIP is a great opportunity for students to make the most of their break.
Not only do students have a blast, they also explore different cultures, do community service like deliver supplies to an orphanage and not to mention… see the world!

Young adults leaving home for the first time have to overcome many challenges. They are about to enter a new and difficult social environment. They must meet new academic and vocational expectations and make decisions on their own, while taking care of themselves in areas that parents have previously been responsible.
These new obstacles are faced by every young adult. All expectations are made more difficult by the student having learning differences. Those who parent or work with Aspergers, NLD or students with Learning Differences understand that these students have difficulty adapting to change.

“Cognitive Rigidity” With Young Adults
Several students at each center have the classic form of “Cognitive Rigidity” which is very intractable. The defenses they have erected are formidable.
Some things we know:
If you get into a power struggle with them it does not work. If you try to argue with them or prove them wrong it will only makes them retreat further into the confines of their fortress. (Factoid: they are very sensitive to even a minor insult, while they are oblivious to dishing out some really severe ones themselves).

Berkeley Students Participate in Shoreline Cleanup
Nineteen students and three staff participated in the 24th annual Shoreline Cleanup. Joining over 1,700 other volunteers, a total of 8,000 pounds of garbage was removed from the Bay Area shoreline!

Multitasking happens when a person attempts to do more than one task at the same time, accompanied by numerous distractions that cause us to lose our place and have to stop what we are doing.
