How the People at CIP Changed My Life

By Travis Toor, Brevard Center Student

When I first came to the College Internship Program, I felt like it was a going to be a prison sentence. I didn’t know anyone and, to be honest, I was scared. My roommate and now best friend, Andrew, made me feel a little better the first day we met. He was, and is always, willing to help me out with anything I need.

All the students here have taught me to be accepting about others’ difficulties. Moultrie, well, I could say so much about this bright, smart and caring individual. He’s the kind of guy that’s down to earth but still knows how to help people. He taught me self-control and self-discipline. I will miss him the most.

Then there’s the one person we all know and love, Jarrett. While we all have our own opinions about him, here’s mine; Jarrett is a very caring individual who always knows how to make me laugh. I’m going to miss him a lot.

Travis McArthur, while I have only known him for a short time, has helped me not only as a social mentor but also as the residential coordinator. I wish him the best of luck in this job. Without the guidance of the residential staff I would have never learned as much as I have.

Thanks to Annette and Michelle, residential staff members. From them I have learned that it’s OK to be myself. Janet Hrezo, my tutor, and Ryan Therriault, academic coordinator, helped me by pushing me to my limits mentally. I will also miss the advisors, Jodi Pierce for helping me with money management and Sharona Sommer for helping me to learn to cook. Then there’s Steve Nassar. He may be kind of goofy, but I don’t know where I’d be without him.

Joan Williamson has always been there to keep me going and to discipline me when I needed it and I needed it a lot sometimes. I will miss the students and staff here but they will always be in my mind as some of the most accepting and caring people I know. So I end with this, the words of the great Moultrie Woodall, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll hit the stars!”
