Brevard Center Internship Spotlight
Touring at The Rossetter House Museum
By Janet Hrezo, Brevard Center
If you visit The Historical Rossetter House Museum in Melbourne, Florida, you might meet Moultrie Woodall, a Brevard Center student who is interning there. Moultrie does a variety of jobs, from helping maintain the grounds to guiding tours. “I’m never doing the same things twice,” he says.
The museum is actually made up of a garden, a small family cemetery dating from 1865 and two houses built in the early 1900’s which are furnished with Victorian antiques. Interning at the museum is “always full of new experiences,” but the opportunity to “help preserve local history” is an important part of Moultrie’s work.
Moultrie is particularly excited about the upcoming Old Eau Gallie Murder Mystery Tour in July. The museum becomes the scene of a crime with local actors playing ‘Clue’ like characters. Visitors are challenged to solve the mystery and win a prize. Scenes are staged throughout the museum and grounds to provide clues to help the amateur sleuths piece all the information together. Moultrie, a member of the CIP Drama Club, will be a narrator.
Internships are a crucial part of the CIP program. They enable students to explore career interests and to develop the skills to find employment, becoming responsible employees.
“Working as tour guides enables our students to fine-tune their social and communication skills while developing professionally overall.” Says Jennifer Kolarik, Brevard Center career coordinator.
The Historical Rossetter House and Museum has opened its doors to 3 CIP students over the past few years. “it is a wonderful internship opportunity for our students who have a love for history and a great ability for memorizing vast amounts of information.” Says Jennifer Kolarik. “What makes the Rossetter House an especially great internship site is the supportive nature of the staff and the great communication of the site manager, Jillian Burghardt. We look forward to a continued relationship in the years to come.”
