Shift Can Happen

By Ryan Therriault, Brevard Center Academic Coordinator

When students begin an academic track at the Brevard Center they take on a lot of responsibility. Assuming they are ready, they work hard to juggle college classes, CIP classes and appointments, in addition to new surroundings and routines. They essentially begin a new life, which can be overwhelming. However, with the students’ hard work and determination, in combination with dedicated staff, shift can happen.

One such student that displayed a significant shift is Holden Bias. Holden is very dedicated student. He works ahead, he completes all his work and he always asked for help when he needed it. As a result of his academic dedication, Holden has received his general Associate of Arts from Brevard Community College while at CIP, and he plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Central Florida.

Holden accomplished so much in the time that he was here at the Brevard Center. Holden is more confident and is better able to manage stress, which lowered his test anxiety and helped him maintain better verbal self control. He was able to accomplish these things by remaining open to feedback from staff and students. In addition, he was punctual to appointments and was consistently engaged during CIP and BCC classes.

Socially, Holden became very involved in alternate activities on the weekends, but was able to maintain a balance between school and leisure activities. Holden developed valuable friendships during his time here that he continues to maintain. His participation in counseling and social mentoring helped him gain skills in theses areas. He will be missed and it is nice to hear updates of Holden’s continued progress post CIP.
