CIP South African Safari 2010
Join CIP’s founder, Dr. Michael McManmon, on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to South Africa! There are 16 slots available. This tour is open to CIP students, parents & staff first. CIP alumni are eligible to sign up after November 1st, 2009, providing there is still space.

Day 1 – 11th June 2010
Arrival in Johannesburg; World cup soccer games.
On arrival at OR Tambo Johannesburg International Airport, group will be met by an AWOL guide and then transferred to accommodation. At 4pm this afternoon the World Cup soccer games begin and we are able to attend the Johannesburg stadium (tickets to be arranged by guests) (DBB)

Day 2- 12th June 2010
Apartheid Museum and Constitutional Court
Today we travel through Jo’burg centre to the Apartheid Museum to learn about South Africa’s long struggle for democracy and the Constitutional Court to explore the history of South Africa Politcal transition. This Modern African Building is designed to represent the diversity of South Africa’s landscapes and culture and are the first post-apartheid government buildings. (LDBB)

Day 3 – 13th June 2010
Depart to Kruger National Park
On leaving Johannesburg we have a long drive (7 hours) to get to Kruger National Park. (Possibly to fly but does add to expenses). We travel via the Panoramic Route, highlights are God’s Window and the twisted Bourke’s Luck Potholes. We also visit the Gold Rush Town of Pilgrims Rest for lunch in an old Historic Hotel where frantic gold mining activities took place here during the late 1800′s. Fortunes were made but more were lost. We arrive in Kruger National Park in time for evening dinner. (LDBB)

Day 4 – 14th June 2010
Game drives in Kruger National Park
To make the most of the day we recommend an early morning start to commence a game viewing soon after sun-up. Included is a healthy breakfast and lunch. A morning game drive is undertaken in search of wild animals. No guarantees can be given that you will encounter the “Big Five” (lion, rhino, elephant, leopard and buffalo) but you are certain of seeing, at very close quarters, an abundance of antelope, birds, mammals and reptiles. We return to our secure rest camp at lunch and relaxing time in the afternoon. (LDBB)

Day 5 – 15th June 2010
Rafting on the Sabie River; Open vehicle game drive
The Sabie River provides 20 rapids (grade 2–3 – easy!) with areas of scenic vegetation and outstanding birdlife viewing. This 8km route is yielding to the novice, yet accommodating to the thrill seeker within all of us. The day includes 4 hours of rafting, picnic lunch on the scenic riverbanks. Rafters are Certified Operating Members of the African Paddling Association and subscribe to the Codes of Safety and Ethics thereof. River guides are handpicked and experienced in river running, safety and first aid, with affiliation or endorsement from international bodies. Trips are accompanied by safety kayakers and followed by a support vehicle. (LDBB)

Day 6 – 16th June 2010
Transfer from Kruger to Cape Town; cable car up Table Mountain OR yacht trip in Table Bay
With an early start we depart on flight from Nelspruit to Cape Town. Time and weather permitting we head straight out from Table Bay on a yacht to watch the sunset over the Atlantic ocean OR head up Table Mountain in the aerial Cable Car to enjoy the spectacular views at sunset. In the evening we head out to a restaurant in the waterfront for dinner. (LDBB)

Day 7 -17th June 2010
Cape Peninsula Tour
We depart from the City taking in the scenic coastal drive to world famous Cape of Good Hope part of Table Mountain National Park. Enjoy a leisurely hike from Cape of Good Hope to Cape Point, making the legend of the renowned “Cape of Storms” come alive. Wildlife including eland, zebra and bontebok can be seen amongst the unique vegetation of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Relax and enjoy a picnic lunch while sharing the same sense of wonder that drove early explorers to discover the spice route to the East. (LDBB)

Day 8 – 18th June 2010
African Penguins AND Soccer Games
In the morning we visit the African Penguins on Boulders Beach. Lunch today is in Kalk Bay’s working harbour, with exquisite views overlooking False Bay and the mountains beyond. At 20.30 this evening we can watch the World Cup soccer games schedule (tickets to be arranged by guests). For those without tickets we are able to watch games on a big screen. (LDBB)

Day 9 – 19th June 2010
Bicycle Township Tour & local soccer game in Township;
Today we spend a few hours out to Masiphumelele, an impoverished African community on a bicycle tour in the morning and community service in the afternoon. We start at the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN) project where you can meet the owner, Phumlani who has started his own bicycle business. A local qualified guide will escort guests around the township, visiting interesting places and explaining Xhosa customs.
A highlight of the tour is traditional dancing by the Sangoma (African traditional healer) and a visit to the local preschool (who receive part of the tour proceeds towards the betterment of their facilities). Enjoy lunch in an African home and taste of authentic African cultural cuisine. The focus of the community service would be to spend one-on-one time with school children of a younger age and teaching them on how to use the internet, planting trees or other community service activities as preferred. (The local library in the township has facilities). A soccer game with the local township children can also be organised. (LDBB)

Day 10 – 20th June
Robben Island
After an early breakfast we depart to the Waterfront to catch the 9am ferry out to Robben Island on a guided tour by ex-prisoners to visit the prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison, before emerging and becoming President of the new, democratic South Africa. Time permitting; there will be a last minute shopping expedition for souvenirs at V&A Waterfront before departing from Cape Town International Airport.
