Preparing for the Next Step: Skills to Help Make a Smooth Transition to a Post-Secondary Placement!
By Karen Noel, Berkshire Center Admissions Coordinator
What skills do we expect adults to have in order to be successful in this world? Why not start preparing your son or daughter now so they are ahead of the game when the time comes. The skill we are going to talk about in this issue is helping your son or daughter develop a plan to both get themselves up in the morning and go to bed at a reasonable time.
There are a variety of methods to achieve either of these goals— alarm clocks that wander the room, alarm clocks that shake the bed, Ipods, alarms on a computer, phones and watches that can be experimented with.
My suggestions is to talk to your teenager about what they feel will work for them. If the first method doesn’t work come together again to problem solve and discuss the next attempt. You will be teaching your child to come up with solutions without making them feel bad if they don’t work.
