Mentoring Flexibility
By Karen Noel, Berkshire Center Admissions Coordinator
As staff working with young adults that have additional challenges trying to get along in the world and be successful, we at the Berkshire Center pride ourselves on being good role models and treating each other with kindness, and going out of our way to help one another.
The best example yet of how our staff works so well together came This January during a snow storm. We had a family scheduled for an interview that lived approximately 2 1/2 hours away. Their appointment was scheduled for 10:30 am. The Northeast woke up what was called a “snow squall” that made for messy driving and caused many accidents.
The family that was set to interview was determined to get here, so they left at 7:30 am and arrived at our door at 12:45. Staff quickly came to the rescue and supplied me with alternate times they could meet with this family and accomplish their portions of the interview, even after the original appointments were missed. We had asked the family to do whatever they needed to in order to make sure they arrived safely, which required driving at a much slower rate than usual.
I have worked at many schools thorough out The Berkshires and the cooperative and caring spirit here at The College Internship Program is unparalleled in my experience. These are exactly the skills our students need to see and feel and learn and know to help make them happier and more valued in the workplace.
Wholeheartedly,
Karen Noel
