Ben and Me
By Zach Lichterman, First-Year Student, The Brevard Center
I love animals. I’ve never had a dog but I have had two parakeets, two frogs and two hermit crabs as pets. My Aunt Betty and my Uncle Sid had a dog named Rachel and my Aunt Shelley also had a dog. I really loved them both but I never had a dog of my mine.
Ben is a Yorkshire Terrier who is almost six pounds and almost one year old (his birthday is in April). He has already gone through his service dog training but is still too young to be a companion for patients in hospitals and hospices. His owner, Lois, wanted him to keep practicing his service dog skills so that he would be terrific at his job someday. So, Ben is practicing with us.
I think that Ben must be the best dog ever. He makes me feel happy every time I come to my therapy sessions and everyone tells me that I smile a lot more after I see him. When I’m with Ben, I feel like he’s mine. I hold him and walk him. He goes to Starbucks with me and entertains everyone there. It just feels good to have him around. I’ve decided that, when I finally have my own apartment, I’m going to get a dog just like him but I’ll never forget Ben.

A very lovely story about Ben, and well written. It shows that Zach is a very caring person.
