Congrats to all! CIP will continue our mission of inspiring independence and expanding the foundation for students with learning differences to build happy and productive lives. We thank you for your support!
The spring semester just ended, and the students are all off to enjoy a much-needed summer break. I’m very proud of the CIP students. They worked very hard this semester with their internships. A lot of our students have improved in different areas they needed to work on since the beginning of the spring semester. There has been a tremendous amount of progress.
Summer is in full swing at the Brevard Center! Despite the recent jungle-like heat in the south our students are showing greater Wellness awareness and application than ever before! Some of the healthy happenings around Brevard are: inception of a new cooking curriculum, more dynamic and personalized group sessions catered around individual skill-set, planning and training for our next 5k road race, and applying exercise and cooking cards in daily program areas to increase and improve speed, technique, and processing.
Bloomington Center student, Adam, worked at Life Certified Organic Farm this Spring semester to earn his Organic Growers Certificate. Mendy Kossman, Bloomington Center’s Academic Coordinator, followed Adam working around the greenhouse.

Bella also studied Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Medical Terminology.

On the 18th of May, CIP Berkeley held their first Honors and Mentors Celebration Luncheon. Students were treated to a healthy selection of luncheon choices, as recommended by Tim Nguyen, Wellness Coordinator (with the exception of the chocolate cake the Advisors slipped in).

The local Humane Society in the Berkeley area, where CIP students and staff volunteer, had a very serious fire last week. JoHanne White and her family were living above the Humane Society when a fire broke loose, caused by a malfunctioning dryer. Most of the White families belongings were destroyed. JoHanna credits her dog for waking her up during the fire and saving her life!
On May 25th, 2010, Aaron Samuels graduated from the Vocational Living Skills Program at the College of Alameda. Aaron completed 3 of the 4 semesters of the program and was deemed to be ready to move on earlier than expected.
The Brevard Center’s Spring Convocation and Awards Ceremony was held May 7th and we welcomed parents, special guests and Lucy Allaric Gosselin, CIP’s National Assistant Executive Director for Curriculum Development, who joined us in celebrating the accomplishments of our students. Parents came from as far away as Washington and North Dakota and, thanks to Skype computer technology, we were seen in Trinidad and Tobago by the parents of Dane Sampath.

Chris Kennedy has been a student at the Brevard Center for the past 4 years. Over that time, he has propelled himself to new personal heights while presenting at conferences and open houses about his own experiences at the College Internship Program. At the Brevard Center Convocation and Awards Ceremony this May, Chris was honored with the CIP Student Ambassador Award for his contributions.
Thank you CIP for the wonderful opportunity, it has been a privilege. I appreciate all the help I’ve had from my tutors Marissa, Nikki and Bethany. They helped me a lot, especially during my second semester. I took a childcare course this spring and it went well. So thank you for the help and encouragement you gave me.
