John Elder Robison and Elms College offer 1-day course: The Aspergian Mind

Elms College and the College Internship Program (CIP) are teaming up to offer a graduate level course in autism spectrum disorders at CIP’s campus in Western Massachusetts. The course will be offered on March 5th and is intended for educators, professionals and others who work with individuals on the autism spectrum as well as students seeking a master’s of science degree in the field of autism.

This course will be taught in part by Autism Speaks Board Member John Elder Robison, author of New York Times best seller Look Me in the Eye.

Through lecture and discussion students explore the three essential components of Asperger’s Syndrome – social impairment, speech affect, and physical issues. Participants learn how minor brain differences lead to unusual and even unique thought processes, and how they shape the lives of people with Asperger’s. Differences can be disabling or empowering; students get a sense of this scope and discuss how young people can be helped to see their gifts in the face of sometimes significant disability.

Students learn how individuals with Asperger’s evolve over time, seeing how Asperger’s presents in children, in adolescents, and in adults. Students are required to read Look Me in the Eye prior to the course in order to be prepared to engage in productive discussion.

Recommended for speech pathologists, teachers, and mental health and counseling professionals who deal with young people with Asperger’s. This is a stand-alone course that is also recommended for parents and family members seeking insight. This course counts as an elective for the ASD master’s and C.A.G.S. programs.

About Elms College Masters Degree Programs
Elms College offers a master of science and a certificate of advanced graduate study (C.A.G.S.) in autism
spectrum disorders (ASD) as well as a C.A.G.S. in communication sciences and disorders. The master’s and C.A.G.S. in ASD are each 30 to 36 credit programs with or without practicum and include the five-course BACB-approved sequence.

The C.A.G.S. in CSD is a 30-credit program offering concentrations in auditory disorders, autism spectrum disorders, child disorders, literacy and literacy disorders, and management. Students may enroll in up to nine credits of coursework before being required to apply for admission to our master’s or C.A.G.S. programs.
