By Janet Hrezo, CIP Brevard Center
Summer 2010 was a busy and productive semester at the Brevard Center. We worked hard but still had fun. We said goodbye to students moving on to new endeavors and hello to those who will be joining us in August. We also had the opportunity to spend time with high school students participating in CIP’s 2 Week Teen Summer Program at Florida Tech.

By Janet Hrezo, Brevard Center Staff
Students and staff at the Brevard Center got together in July to say goodbye to five students who are leaving CIP and taking the next step forward in their lives. All of us are very proud of them and of what they have accomplished.

Brevard Student Senate Cook-Off
By Janet Hrezo, CIP Brevard Staff
The CIP Student Senate knows how to get the attention of students and staff with one word, FOOD. Whether our passion is eating, cooking or both, the cook-off was an event much anticipated by all. The food was appetizers, the chefs were creative and the competition was fierce. Judging the event were Annette Corrado, Residential Staff, Ryan Therriault, Academic Coordinator, Janet Becker, Social Mentor, and Rose Dougherty, Admissions Coordinator.

My Experience with Asperger’s Syndrome and the College Internship Program
By Daniel Vance Eakin, CIP Brevard Center Student
I first realized that I had Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) at the age of twenty-seven. A multitude of emotions came over me when I was diagnosed. The initial feeling was an overwhelming sense that I was discovering that I had yet another mental problem (previously I was given a diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention deficit disorder). I later developed strong feelings against AS. However, those came about as I learned what it has done to me. The most powerful feeling I have against this syndrome is that I feel that it is hindering my ability to become a complete adult.

Wellness Highlights from Brevard
By Jamie Kennedy, CIP Brevard Center
Summer is in full swing at the Brevard Center! Despite the recent jungle-like heat in the south our students are showing greater Wellness awareness and application than ever before! Some of the healthy happenings around Brevard are: inception of a new cooking curriculum, more dynamic and personalized group sessions catered around individual skill-set, planning and training for our next 5k road race, and applying exercise and cooking cards in daily program areas to increase and improve speed, technique, and processing.
Brevard Convocation and Awards Ceremony
By Janet Hrezo, CIP Brevard Center
The Brevard Center’s Spring Convocation and Awards Ceremony was held May 7th and we welcomed parents, special guests and Lucy Allaric Gosselin, CIP’s National Assistant Executive Director for Curriculum Development, who joined us in celebrating the accomplishments of our students. Parents came from as far away as Washington and North Dakota and, thanks to Skype computer technology, we were seen in Trinidad and Tobago by the parents of Dane Sampath.

Brevard Center Garden Club Update
By Daniel Eakin and Moultrie Woodall, Brevard Students
Photos by Zach Lichterman, Brevard Student
After a long winter (at least, by Florida’s standards), the Brevard Center’s Garden Club returned to find, to their dismay, what seemed to be a barren wasteland. The frosts of January and February, while major crises for the state’s citrus industry, were nothing less than cataclysmic for the center’s modest vegetable garden.

Spring Break Takes Brevard to Washington D.C.
By Travis McArthur, Residential Coordinator
During the Brevard Center’s Spring Break, I went with a group of students to Washington D.C. On the trip we experienced many things including new food, new cultural experiences and an assortment of fascinating museums. We stayed in our nation’s capital for six nights and saw as much as we could.
On the first day, after we checked into the hotel, we took a stroll through the National Mall and got our first glimpse of the Capital Building and the Washington Monument. We ate lunch at Union Station and then explored the shopping there. Later, we continued to discover more of Washington’s sights, and experienced the city at night.
