Wellness Highlights from Brevard
By Jamie Kennedy, CIP Brevard Center
Summer is in full swing at the Brevard Center! Despite the recent jungle-like heat in the south our students are showing greater Wellness awareness and application than ever before! Some of the healthy happenings around Brevard are: inception of a new cooking curriculum, more dynamic and personalized group sessions catered around individual skill-set, planning and training for our next 5k road race, and applying exercise and cooking cards in daily program areas to increase and improve speed, technique, and processing.

During Wellness classes this semester, the students have enjoyed participating in Yoga and Pilates, which helps to strengthen their core muscles and also gives them relaxation techniques they can use on their own. “Yoga helps me relax and takes my mind off of the things that give me pressure,” first year student, Kiersten, said.

Wellness Student of the Month
By: Trung Tim Nguyen, Berkeley Center Health & Wellness Coordinator
Akira Abenes, a.k.a. Guido, has consistently been a shining light in health and wellness at the Berkeley center. Although he does not have a YMCA membership, it does not deter him from getting regular physical activity.
Weekly, he participates in yoga, walking club as well as strength training in the fitness room on his own. He would apply and practice the resistance exercises he had learned during individual wellness session to improve his overall strength and endurance.

Wellness Student of the Month
By Jim Walsh, The Bloomington Center
Matt Patterson works at the IU Wright Food court hauling piles of heavy trays, washing pots and pans, carrying out the trash, and wiping tables during the hectic daily ebb and flow of the student population. However, rather than just zonking out on the couch after such a physically strenuous shift, Matt has been keeping with his own active fitness program.
On Mondays, Matt has an individual wellness session where he does an hour of guided weight training. This session is also used to monitor Matt’s weight, which has steadily been declining since the summer. “I haven’t had French fries for like 4 months, I’ve also cut back on my pop,” Matt said. “I can’t wait till it gets warmer, when I can walk and ride my bike around more.”
