The Art of Letting Go: Transitioning

During the CIP Summer Program students get a sneak peek at what it’s like to be away from home and living on a college campus.

Transitions can be especially difficult for students on the autism spectrum or with learning differences, and the CIP summer program can help them to prepare for what happens as they move to the next stage of their lives.

Our curriculum touches on nearly all of the areas addressed in Dr. McManmon’s article The Art of Letting Go: College Transitioning for the LD Student:

Breaking the Dependency
Students spend 2 weeks in a supported environment away from family and their main support systems.

Changing Relationships
Students will make decision on their own with the help of staff and have the opportunity to connect with their families in the evening to share their successes with new found independence.

How Much Communication Is Enough?
Staff help students to find a good balance for keeping in touch with their family without having it impact their social successes.

Using the Supports You Need
The College 101 session will help students learn what services are available in college and how they differ from the services offered in high school.

The Steel Umbilical Cord
Students and  their families have the opportunity to spend two weeks developing a new relationship where the student can learn to adviocate for assistance from people other than their parents.

Residential Life
Students will take responsibility for their own lives. CIP staff act as residential advisors and are available to offer support with managing hygiene, medication management or roommate relationships.

Balancing Nutrition, Sleep and Exercise
For many students living in a dorm can be their first opportunity to eat what they want, sleep as little as they want and avoid exercise. The CIP summer program will explore why balancing nutrition, sleep and exercise are important and crucial to college success.

Getting the Lay of the land and Being Safe
Living on a college campus, eating in the dorms and touring the local area will get students more comfortable with navigating a college campus. Students are also taught to look for landmarks and learn to use their cell phones if necessary.

Tolerance and Diversity
The CIP summer program strives to have a diverse group with each summer program. Students are exposed to a variety of different people and staff can help to mentor and guide them through new situations.

Handling Your Own Finances
Students will have the opportunity to practice budgeting their money for meals, tips and special treats like popcorn at the movies.

Dr. McManmon is the Founder of the College Internship Program (CIP)Psychology Today blog author, and author of the new book “Made for Good Purpose, What Every Parent Needs to Know to Help Their Adolescent with Asperger’s, High Functioning Autism or a Learning Difference Become an Independent Adult.

If you’re interested in joining us for another fun summer submit your application now! Participants who join us this summer can expect expert staff and outstanding programming, a top-rated college or university setting, and plenty of action-packed learning and recreational activities.

During our two exciting weeks together, participants will be introduced to CIP’s comprehensive curriculum, developing goals through the Person-Centered Planning process, practicing independent living skills and social competencies. Best of all, participants will have lots of opportunities to build new friendships and have plenty of fun!

Spend Summer With CIP

By Robert Oakes, Marketing Assistant

IMG_0053Spaces are filling up quickly for the 2011 CIP Teen Summer Program, and staff and students alike are excited for this year’s fun two-week session of social, academic, career and life skills training.

Now in its third year, the CIP Summer Program gives teens with Asperger’s and LD between the ages of 16 and 19 the opportunity to experience a taste of college, while developing new friendships and learning independent living skills.

The sessions occur during July at Indiana University; Florida Institute of Technology; University of California, Berkeley; Elms College and University of Buffalo.

Each session is run by experienced CIP staff members, as well as Master’s Degree students and special education teachers, and includes workshops in social skills, self-advocacy, person-centered planning, managing priorities, navigating college campuses and handling academic demands. They are also given support with everyday tasks like doing laundry and getting up and out on their own. Students live together in dorms, eat two meals a day at the school and share a third meal out at a restaurant, where they learn about ordering, tipping, budgeting and socializing. Students also participate in fun activities and events with students from CIP’s full year program, as well as CIP alumni mentors.

According to Summer Program Coordinator Abby Tierney, the program has been very successful and continues to grow year after year.

“It’s been very well received,” she said. “Students come away with a lot of self esteem. For many, it’s the first time they have been with a group of others like them, and that’s a great experience.”

Abby said they have several return students this year and those that are returning are very excited to be coming back.

Those interested in applying for this year’s summer program should contact Abby Tierney by calling 413-243-0710 x13 or by sending email to atierney@cipworldwide.org. Prospective students will need to provide testing results, reference forms, transcripts, an application and a $50 application fee. Appropriate candidates are selected on a first-come-first-serve basis. There is a 12-student limit at each location.
