Summer 2010 was a busy and productive semester at the Brevard Center. We worked hard but still had fun. We said goodbye to students moving on to new endeavors and hello to those who will be joining us in August. We also had the opportunity to spend time with high school students participating in CIP’s 2 Week Teen Summer Program at Florida Tech.
CIP Berkshire students had a tremendously successful summer session in their college classes at Berkshire Community College (BCC).
While these classes are worth as many credits and have the same amount of course work as a regular semester, they are compressed into either six or eight weeks.
The College Internship Program (CIP) at the Berkshire Center in Lee, Massachusetts and Elms College in Chicopee are working together to offer graduate level courses from the Elms College Masters Degree Program at the College Internship Program campus in Western Massachusetts.
Elms College offers a master of science and a certificate of advanced graduate study (C.A.G.S.) in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) as well as a C.A.G.S. in communication sciences and disorders. The course offered in November on the CIP campus in Lee, Massachusetts will bring professional staff training and development and is open to CIP staff members and practitioners from all over New England.
Hunter, a Bloomington Center first-year student, is volunteering at WildCare this summer, an organization that provides professional care to injured, sick, and orphaned wildlife in order that they may be returned to the wild. WildCare also promotes education through outreach programs at area schools. Hunter works twice a week and learns from WildCare staff how to care for the animals.
Things are moving along quickly as we prepare for the College Support Program’s opening in August. Young adults with Learning Differences will have a unique opportunity to advance through college receiving individualized social, academic, career and life skills support.

A total of 46 new students from across the country (including Israel, Spain, Antigua and Puerto Rico) are enrolled in the 2010 CIP Summer Program located on four college campuses in the US.
The 2009 pilot Summer Program in Berkeley set the course for this years expansion to the campuses of Elms College in Massachusetts, FIT in Florida, IU Bloomington in Indiana and UC Berkeley in California. Each location gives teens a 2 week introduction to CIP’s comprehensive curriculum developed specifically for students with Asperger’s syndrome, ADD and other learning differences.
The CIP Student Senate knows how to get the attention of students and staff with one word, FOOD. Whether our passion is eating, cooking or both, the cook-off was an event much anticipated by all. The food was appetizers, the chefs were creative and the competition was fierce. Judging the event were Annette Corrado, Residential Staff, Ryan Therriault, Academic Coordinator, Janet Becker, Social Mentor, and Rose Dougherty, Admissions Coordinator.
While some students work jobs and internships in the summer, other Berkshire students are taking advantage of summer course offerings at Berkshire Community College.
The following are a few of the classes being taken this summer:
Field Day is the last opportunity for students and staff to get together before the semester ends at the Brevard Center and we were joined by students from the CIP High School Summer Program for fun, games, food and good company.
Charlie Jacobs is a third year student at the College Internship Program at the Berkshire Center in Lee, Massachusetts. Charlie was born in New York City, the son of Alan and Barbara Jacobs. He attended the Churchill School in NYC and then graduated from Maplebrook School in Amenia, NY in 2007. Charlie is currently interning with Michael Lavin Flower, a professional photographer, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
Our student alumni continue to make strides at colleges and universities while employed and living independently. Many of our alumni are also active members of their community. See below for colleges, degree and employment information on CIP alumni.
